“The best questions about Green Island are the ones that end with you being there.”

Green Island Visitor Questions Answered

Everything you want to know before you go,  the ferry, the reef, the activities, and what to bring.

How do I get to Green Island?

Green Island is reached by fast catamaran from Cairns, with the crossing taking approximately 45 minutes to an hour depending on the service and conditions. Ferries to Green Island leave from the Marlin Marina on the Cairns city waterfront, and some operators run their check-in and travel desks inside the nearby Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street, so confirm your check-in point with your operator when you book. Most day tour packages also include hotel pickup and return transfers. For operators, timings and booking options, see our full guide to the Green Island ferry from Cairns.

How long should I stay on Green Island?

You can visit for a half day, full day, or overnight stay. A full day gives you time to snorkel, relax on the beach, walk through the rainforest, and enjoy optional extras like Seawalker or a glass bottom boat tour. If you stay overnight, you’ll enjoy the peace and tranquility after the day visitors leave.

What should I bring?

Bring swimwear, a towel, hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. If you’re snorkelling or doing any tours, all gear is usually provided. You may also want cash or a card for lunch, drinks, or souvenirs.

Can I snorkel straight off the beach?

Yes! One of the best things about Green Island is that you can snorkel directly from the shore. It’s perfect for beginners and families, with calm, shallow water and colourful fish right near the beach.

What marine life can I see?

Expect to see tropical reef fish, clams, starfish, and sometimes even green sea turtles. Parrotfish, clownfish and butterflyfish are commonly spotted around the coral bommies near the island.

What is Seawalker and do I need dive experience?

Seawalker is an underwater helmet dive where you can walk on the sea floor without needing to swim. No dive or snorkelling experience is required—just breathe normally and enjoy the view!

Are there food and drinks available on the island?

Yes, Green Island has a café, bar and resort dining options available. You can grab lunch, snacks, coffee or tropical cocktails. Some day tour packages include lunch, check your inclusions when booking.

Are there shops on Green Island?

Yes, there’s a boutique shop offering souvenirs, sunscreen, swimwear, reef-safe products and snorkel gear. Perfect for picking up essentials or a memento from your day.

What happened to Cassius the crocodile?

Cassius was the world’s largest crocodile in captivity and lived at Marineland Melanesia on Green Island. He passed away peacefully in November 2024 and remains a much-loved part of the island’s history.

Can I walk through the rainforest?

Absolutely. Green Island is one of the only coral cays with a rainforest at its centre. Take a stroll along the shaded boardwalk and discover native plants, birds and butterflies. It’s peaceful, shady and a lovely break from the beach.

Can I take a scenic helicopter ride?

Yes! Scenic helicopter flights are available directly from Green Island. Soar above the reef and enjoy breathtaking aerial views of coral cays, lagoons and turquoise reef systems. A truly unforgettable experience.

Is there drinking water on the island?

Yes, filtered water is available at several locations. Please bring a refillable bottle to help reduce plastic waste and keep hydrated throughout your day.

Is Green Island suitable for families?

Definitely! Green Island is family-friendly with calm waters, shallow snorkelling areas, guided activities, and shaded spaces. Families love the glass bottom boat, Marineland, and relaxing beach days.

How much does a Green Island trip cost?

What you pay depends on the operator you travel with, whether you choose a half-day or full-day trip, and the extras you add — lunch, a glass bottom boat tour, snorkelling gear or a Seawalker helmet dive all change the total. Fares also move with the season, so the live price is always the one shown when you book. You can see current packages on our Green Island tickets and deals page, or weigh the options side by side with Compare Green Island Tours.

When is the best time of year to visit Green Island?

Green Island is a year-round destination. The drier months from around May to October bring milder days, lighter winds and lovely visibility for snorkelling, which is why they are the most popular. From November to April it is warmer and more humid with the chance of an afternoon shower, but the water is beautifully warm and the island feels quieter. Our Green Island weather guide has the month-by-month detail.

Do I need a stinger suit?

Marine stingers are a consideration in tropical North Queensland, generally from around November through to May. During stinger season most visitors choose to wear a full-body lycra stinger suit while swimming or snorkelling, and suits are usually available to hire on the island, and some tours include one, so check your tour’s inclusions. Outside those months many people swim without one. Our marine stinger season and reef safety guide explains what to expect.

Can I stay overnight on Green Island?

Yes. There is resort accommodation on the island, so you can stay on after the day visitors head back to Cairns. The late afternoon and early morning are the reward — quiet beaches, soft light and the boardwalks almost to yourself. See our Green Island accommodation page for what is available.

Is Green Island wheelchair accessible?

Green Island is easier to get around than many reef destinations. The jetty, the main boardwalks and the resort areas are largely flat and firm underfoot, though soft sand and boarding the vessel can be harder going. Facilities and assistance vary between operators and vessels, so it is always worth confirming your specific needs when you book. Our accessibility and family guide has more detail.

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Green Island, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.

  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
