What are the essentials?

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, swimwear, a towel, a refillable water bottle, and cash or a card for extras.

Do I need my own snorkel gear?

No, it can be hired on the island. Some tours include it and some don’t, so check your tour’s inclusions. Your own well-fitting mask gives the best seal.

It’s recommended from about November to May, and useful all year for sun protection. Suits can be hired on the island.

What to Bring to Green Island: A Practical Packing Guide

Green Island is well-equipped for day visitors,  there is no need to carry more than the essentials. This guide covers everything you should bring to ensure a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable day on the reef.

Sun Protection — Your Most Important Priority

Reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based) is the single most important item to bring. Chemical sunscreens cause coral damage and are discouraged within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. A rash vest or long-sleeve UV-protective swimwear is the most effective sun protection for time in the water and reduces how much sunscreen you need. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses complete your sun protection for time on the beach.

Swimwear and Water Gear

Bring swimwear you are comfortable snorkelling in. Rash vests and wetsuits can also be hired on the island for guests who do not own them. Water shoes or reef-safe sandals are useful for walking on the shoreline — the reef can be sharp underfoot. Snorkelling equipment is available to hire on the island; if you own your own well-fitting mask and snorkel, bringing them will ensure the best seal and comfort.

Practical Items

A reusable water bottle, the island has drinking water facilities, and staying hydrated in tropical heat is important. A small dry bag or waterproof phone case for valuables on the beach. Cash or a debit/credit card for any purchases not covered by your tour package. A light towel. Any prescription medications you may require during the day. That is genuinely all you need.

Camera and Photography

A waterproof camera or underwater camera case is worth bringing for the snorkelling. Phone waterproof pouches are widely available and suitable for most snorkelling depths. The marine life at Green Island provides excellent photographic opportunities, particularly sea turtles and reef fish in the clear shallow water near the beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack for a day at Green Island?

Pack swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. A rash vest or stinger suit is recommended, especially during stinger season, and comfortable footwear helps for the rainforest boardwalk.

Do I need to bring snorkelling gear to Green Island?

Not necessarily. Snorkelling equipment is available to hire on the island. Some tours include snorkel gear and some don’t, so check your tour’s inclusions before you book. If you prefer your own mask, snorkel and fins, you’re welcome to bring them.

Should I bring a stinger suit to Green Island?

A full-body stinger suit is strongly recommended during stinger season (approximately November to May) and is a sensible precaution at any time. Suits also provide excellent sun protection and can be hired on the island.

What sunscreen should I use at Green Island?

Use reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the Great Barrier Reef’s coral and marine life. Combining sunscreen with a rash vest, hat and UV-protective clothing is the most reef-responsible and effective approach to sun protection.

What should I not forget for Green Island?

Easy items to forget include reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a hat and a card or cash for lunch and extras. Remember to take all rubbish back with you on the ferry to help protect the reef.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Green Island, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the turtles, seabirds and marine life from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
